Ethel Mae Buell Resident of Danville Ethel Mae Buell passed away June 26, 2008. She was born in 1920 in Davenport, IA. During the Great Depression, the family moved to Berkeley, CA, where Ethel's father, George P. Hall, opened a diner on Telegraph Avenue in front of Sather Gate. Ethel was the youngest of five children and graduated from Berkeley High. She attended UC Berkeley for two years before getting a war-time job at Pacific Bell in San Francisco. She married Russell Buell in 1946 and moved to Orinda where she worked as an Administrative Assistant to the President of Bancroft Library at Cal. Upon retirement, she and Russ moved to Crow Canyon Country Club where they were Charter Members and where she resided for 20 years. Ethel is fondly remembered for her engaging smile and quick wit, her devotion to her family and friends, and her fierce sense of competition in Shanghai Rummy and Dominoes. Ethel is survived by her son, Steven Buell of Hollister, and her two grandchildren, David Buell of San Diego and Megan Buell of Orinda. To celebrate Ethel's life, the family is hosting a luncheon in her honor. We encourage all who attend, in lieu of flowers or donations, to bring a favorite written story about Ethel to place in a keepsake family album. The luncheon will be served in the Eugene O'Neill Room at Crow Canyon Country Club on Saturday, July 19, 2008 from noon until 3 p.m. Published in the Contra Costa Times from 7/6/2008 - 7/13/2008.
