A Mother's Day visit turned violent Sunday when a San Leandro teen stabbed his father multiple times in the chest, police said.

The San Leandro family was in Antioch for Mother's Day when the 17-year-old suspect, along with his 16-year-old brother, left a residence in the 4500 block of Deer Way without permission shortly before 8 p.m., Antioch police Sgt. Diane Aguinaga said.

The boys wound up at Black Diamond Middle School, 4730 Sterling Hill Drive, when a van pulled up offering to sell the boys marijuana, she said.

After the boys declined, a group of six or seven men jumped out of the vehicle, punched at least one of the boys and stole their shoes, cell phones and a hat, Aguinaga said.

Unfamiliar with Antioch, the boys called their father from a pay phone, and he came to the school to pick them up.

Enraged at his sons' activities, the intoxicated father, Greg Lawrence, 45, got the 17-year-old boy in a headlock, Aguinaga said. As he was holding his son, the 16-year-old boy grabbed a beer bottle, brought to the scene by the father, and smashed it over his father's head, the sergeant said.

As Lawrence turned his attention toward the younger son, the 17-year-old allegedly attacked his father with a folding knife, stabbing him six to seven times in the upper chest, Aguinaga said.

In the melee, Lawrence's 19-year-old daughter attempted to break up the fight and also suffered a stab wound to the arm, she said.

Family members transported Lawrence and his daughter to Kaiser Permanente Medical Center in Antioch, where the daughter was treated and released. Lawrence was stabilized and transported to John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek, where he was listed in stable condition and underwent surgery Monday.

The 17-year-old son was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and booked into juvenile hall in Martinez, Aguinaga said.
