Pletschet: Whether to worry over dollar's value

Cliff Pletschet, financial columnist

One of those talking heads on television said the other day that our country doesn't understand the perils facing the U.S. dollar. He didn't go on to explain those problems, probably because the description is too long and complicated and viewers would quickly lose interest.

The everyday person, meaning 99 percent of us, sees the dollar as 100 cents enveloped in a piece of heavy paper, about three inches by six inches, carrying a portrait of old George who has been staring at us for two centuries. A dollar, we discover, is enough to buy some small product, but not enough to buy most others. If it's not enough to make the purchase, we add more dollars to the deal.

While we may worry about stocks, bonds, real estate, investment portfolios, the cost of housing and health care and dozens of other financial perplexities, we never worry about the "value" of the dollar.
