PLEASANT HILL Unlike many of its neighbors, Pleasant Hill has weathered the recession without employee layoffs or furloughs.
But the city isn't flush with cash, so city leaders are cutting back in other ways.
Earlier this week, the City Council approved a two-year contract with the police officers' union that doesn't include a pay increase in the first year and ties a future 2 percent raise to sales and property tax revenue.
Now, Pleasant Hill is reducing the number of days it sweeps the streets.
Beginning Jan. 1, the city will sweep residential streets every other month rather than once a month. Morello Avenue, Boyd Road, Patterson Boulevard and Putnam Boulevard will go from weekly sweepings to twice per month. Finally, sweeping of the city's major commercial thoroughfares, including Contra Costa Boulevard and Golf Club Road, will be reduced slightly, from weekly to four times per month.
"Our goal in all of this is to try and still provide the maximum service we can with the limited revenues that are coming in," said Steve Wallace, public works director.
