BRENTWOOD — Police still are investigating what caused a delivery truck driver to cross the center line of the Highway 4 bypass in Brentwood on Wednesday, resulting in a three-vehicle crash that killed a 59-year-old Antioch woman.
"It appears the truck may have drifted over for unknown reasons," Brentwood police Lt. Tom Hansen said.
After crossing the double-yellow line, the truck sideswiped a Dodge Neon and then struck a Toyota Camry head-on, Hansen said of the preliminary investigation. Drug and alcohol tests have not returned from the truck driver, but there's no indication that impairment was a factor, he said.
Elizabeth Burke, who was driving the Camry, died in the accident, and three others, including the truck driver, suffered non-life-threatening injuries, police said.
There were no injury updates Thursday, Hansen said, including the condition of a woman who is six months pregnant.
The fatal accident was the first for the two-lane stretch of highway between Lone Tree Way and Sand Creek Road, which has no center concrete median, Hansen said.
"If you crash on there, it's not too forgiving with the cars traveling 55 mph each way," he said.
That first phase of the bypass, from Lone Tree Way to Balfour Road, was completed in April 2002 for $30 million.
Police still are looking for witnesses. Anyone with information may contact Officer Mike Homa at 925-634-6911.
