The John Swett Unified School District this week fully reinstated two teachers whose job status had been affected earlier this year by district budget cuts.
School board members unanimously agreed to rescind notices given to Rodeo Hills Elementary School teacher Megan De La Mater and John Swett High School teacher Steven Trotter. De La Mater was a full-timer who was laid off, while Trotter was a full-timer who was reclassified as a part-timer, district officials said. The change in Trotter's status spurred hundreds of students to walk out of class in protest in March.
The district had voted to reduce its teaching staff by the equivalent of six full-time positions because of budget cuts. None of the other teachers affected by the cuts was reinstated.
The board of the 1,700-student district rescinded the notices for De La Mater and Trotter on Wednesday night. It also authorized Trotter, who teaches history, to teach English classes as well.
