John Swett names new superintendent: The John Swett Unified School District board has named an interim superintendent.

Administrative veteran Cynthia LeBlanc will take the helm of the 1,700-student district Aug. 4 and serve either until a permanent replacement is hired or winter break comes around, whichever comes first, district officials said this week.

"We chose her because we were really impressed with her intelligence, work ethic and strong academic background," board President Bill Concannon said.

LeBlanc served as interim superintendent, associate superintendent, chief academic officer and regional superintendent in the neighboring West Contra Costa Unified School District for several years before retiring in 2006. The Richmond resident also served as an administrator in various roles in the Hayward, San Francisco, Novato and Oakland school districts.

John Swett is in the process of hiring a permanent superintendent to replace Michael Roth, who left the district in June.

Concannon said officials hope to have someone in place by Nov. 1.
