LAFAYETTE — A bank robber was tracked by authorities from Lafayette to San Leandro Thursday afternoon before giving them the slip.
The robbery occurred at 2:25 p.m. at Mechanics Bank at 3640 Mt. Diablo Blvd., Contra Costa Sheriff's spokesman Jimmy Lee said.
The robber, who did not display a weapon, robbed the bank and was then tracked southwest on interstates 680 and 580 to San Leandro, Lee said. The Sheriff's Office did not disclose how the suspect was tracked.
"There was no pursuit," Lee said.
According to the Alameda County Sheriff's Office, more than a dozen Lafayette police and Contra Costa sheriff's patrol cars converged at the intersection of 166th Avenue and Foothill Boulevard in an unincorporated area near San Leandro.
"Officers were not able to identify the suspect," Lee said. "He got away."
The robber was described as a black man in his 20s, about 6 feet tall and thin, wearing a blue cap and jeans, and a white sweatshirt. No one was hurt during the robbery.
